Layoffs or No Layoffs? Disney Voluntary Early Retirement Program 'VERO' Introduced for Longtime US Executives Amid Cost Cuts
Disney has launched a voluntary early retirement programme for eligible U.S. executives as part of its cost-cutting strategy. The VERO offers enhanced severance, healthcare support, equity vesting and lifetime Silver Pass benefits to qualifying employees, ahead of further potential workforce reductions across the company.
The Walt Disney Company has launched a time-limited Voluntary Early Retirement Offer (VERO) for eligible longtime executives as part of its wider cost-reduction initiatives and ongoing structural transformations. The program was announced through an internal memo sent by Senior Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Sonia Coleman, offering qualifying leaders enhanced exit packages ahead of anticipated workforce reductions.
Disney Introduces VERO Program for Executives
The voluntary retirement initiative targets U.S.-based employees at the director through executive vice president levels across Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and corporate divisions. As per a report by Variety, eligibility requires individuals to meet a threshold of 65 points, calculated by combining their age and years of service, with a minimum age of 50 and at least 10 years of tenure at the company. Executives participating in the VERO program will receive separation pay of up to one year based on tenure, alongside healthcare support at active employee rates during the severance period. Enhanced Benefits and Equity Vesting
In addition to standard severance terms, the package includes unique financial and lifestyle incentives designed to encourage voluntary departures. As per a report by Deadline, departing executives will benefit from the continued vesting of existing equity awards over the next three years and lifetime Silver Pass access granting free entry to Disney theme parks outside of blackout dates. Furthermore, accepting the early retirement package imposes no non-compete restrictions or limitations on future employment with other organizations. Broader Corporate Cost-Cutting Measures
The introduction of the VERO program follows earlier workforce reductions executed earlier in the year, including layoffs affecting up to 1,000 employees in April followed by additional cuts in July. Senior leadership, including CEO Josh D'Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston, previously informed investors during an earnings call that further labor reductions and selling, general, and administrative expense cuts are planned to streamline operations. Company officials noted that the voluntary program provides qualifying executives with an opportunity to make a personal career decision before involuntary structural measures continue into the upcoming year.
