The National Payments Corporation of India has introduced two major upgrades to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI): UPI 'Tap & Pay' and MyUPI, an AI-powered customer support and control platform. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra unveiled the new capabilities in Mumbai during the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026, alongside NPCI Non-Executive Chairman and Independent Director Ajay Kumar Choudhary, senior bankers, and fintech industry leaders.

UPI 'Tap & Pay' on POS Terminals

The newly launched UPI 'Tap & Pay' feature enables users to make contactless payments at Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals by unlocking an NFC-enabled smartphone and tapping it against an NFC-compatible terminal, the NPCI said in a release. Bank Holidays Next Week: Full City-Wise RBI Schedule From September 14 to 20.

The transaction operates independently of the user's mobile data connection, routing instead through the internet connectivity of the POS machine. This design aims to speed up retail checkouts and maintain reliability in areas with weak cellular coverage. The system supports multiple account types linked to UPI, including RuPay Credit Cards on UPI. Transactions up to INR 5,000 can be completed without a UPI PIN, while payments exceeding that threshold require the user to enter their PIN directly on the POS terminal.

This rollout builds on NPCI's introduction of biometric authentication at GFF 2025. According to official figures, biometric-authenticated UPI transactions surpassed 6.29 billion as of August 31, 2026, highlighting steady consumer adoption of faster transaction verification methods.

MyUPI and AI-Driven Support

Alongside contactless payments, the RBI introduced MyUPI (also referred to as UPI Help 2.0), a platform built on NPCI's Small Language Model, FiMI. The platform functions as a centralised trust and control layer across multiple banks and UPI applications. MyUPI provides users with a consolidated view of transaction histories and AutoPay mandates. It also introduces several safety controls:

  • Safety Switch: Allows users to request the blocking of UPI debit transactions if they suspect account compromise.
  • UPI Number Delink: Enables users to disassociate their mobile number from receiving UPI payments.
  • Payee Context-Based Information: Supplies additional background details about a beneficiary before a transaction is authorised.
  • Automated Chargeback Processing: Facilitates real-time creation of chargebacks for eligible transactions to accelerate complaint resolution for banks and consumers.
  • Transaction Replay: Allows users to recall and repeat past transactions across any supported UPI application.

The platform includes 24x7 multilingual support and self-service features designed to improve operational efficiency for financial institutions while offering greater transparency for everyday digital transactions.
