What He Oversaw

Bier took over the head of product role in July 2025 and quickly became one of the company's most public-facing executives, regularly engaging with users directly on the platform. Under his leadership, X rolled out close to 30 new products, including a "Country-of-Origin" label that revealed the national origin behind user accounts - a feature that ended up exposing a number of high-profile accounts that had presented themselves as American political commentators. A Tenure Marked by Controversy

Grok also became a source of legal exposure for the platform after users exploited it to generate nonconsensual and, in some cases, child sexual abuse material.

Some outlets have pushed back on the rosier figures in Bier's farewell message. Public filings tied to SpaceX's IPO reportedly put X's monthly user base at 550 million as of March, below the 600 million the company has claimed publicly, while download data from analytics firm Appfigures pointed to a decline in installs over the past year. X was also fined by European regulators late last year under the bloc's Digital Services Act.

What Comes Next

Bier did not say what his next project will be, only that he plans to continue advising X. Leadership of the product organization will now be split among several executives, with Benji Taylor taking charge of design alongside colleagues overseeing core product engineering and mobile engineering. It isn't yet clear whether X plans to name a single successor to the head of product title Bier held.

Before joining X, Bier built a reputation in Silicon Valley as a serial founder of youth-focused social apps - he sold the polling app tbh to Facebook in 2017, and messaging app Gas was acquired by Discord in 2023. Both products were later shut down by their acquirers.
