Oracle has laid off approximately 500 employees at its Romania operations, with the process beginning on June 25. The move is part of the company's ongoing global restructuring drive aimed at strengthening its cloud and artificial intelligence business, according to media reports.
Oracle has not publicly confirmed the exact number of jobs affected in Romania. However, the latest cuts follow a similar pattern seen earlier in the United States and India, where employees were let go as part of the same restructuring push.
Second Round Of Cuts In Less Than A Year
This marks Oracle's second wave of layoffs in Romania in under 12 months. The company had cut around 400 positions there in late 2025, which was then described as the largest restructuring in the company's history, as per a Times of India report. The new round affects an operation that employs close to 4,000 people locally, one of Oracle's larger engineering and services hubs in central and eastern Europe. Oracle Layoffs: Firm Cuts 21,000 Jobs As AI Reshapes Operations, Signals More Workforce Changes Ahead.
Which Departments Were Hit
The job cuts span multiple business units, pointing to a broader restructuring rather than a targeted reduction. As per the TOI report, the lines of business flagged as impacted include:
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Database Technologies, One Oracle EMEA, Industries Applications, Oracle Health & Analytics, Customer Success Services, Fusion Applications Development & Support, General & Administrative, Other Technology Groups. Layoffs and AI: Tech Workers With Low AI Usage Face 3 Times Higher Job Loss Risk, Study Finds.
This indicates the layoffs have touched core engineering, support, and back-office roles alike.
How Employees Were Informed
The layoffs were communicated through individual emails rather than a company-wide announcement, according to employee accounts shared online and reported by TOI. The notices were sent by HR with managers copied in, and included supporting documents.
Some employees said the emails referred to the layoffs as "proposed," leaving them unsure whether the decision was final or open to negotiation. Since the notifications went out in phases, employees who had not yet received an email were uncertain whether they had been spared. Several workers also noted that their Slack and other internal accounts remained active even after being informed their roles were being eliminated, adding to the confusion.
Severance Package Details
According to employee accounts cited by TOI, the severance package includes one month's salary for every year of service, plus around three compensatory salaries and two months of garden leave, broadly in line with the earlier Romanian round.
Many employees said the cuts were not tied to individual performance but were part of Oracle's wider restructuring as it prioritises investment in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Oracle Has Cut 21,000 Jobs Globally In A Year
Oracle has reduced its global workforce by 21,000 employees over the past 12 months, a wider scale than previously known, including roles eliminated through the use of AI, Bloomberg News reported earlier.
"The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce," Oracle said in an annual financial regulatory filing.
The company's global headcount fell to 141,000 full-time employees as of the fiscal year ending May 31, down from 162,000 a year earlier. The reductions led to restructuring costs of around INR 17,000 crore (approximately USD 1.8 billion).
