The workforce reduction comes as Samsung faces increasing operational pressure from a sharp rise in memory chip prices, which have more than doubled, according to reports. The company is also dealing with weaker consumer demand, higher raw material costs, a weaker rupee and pressure on sales volumes. Employees reportedly being asked to leave in batches

The company is said to be offering three months' salary along with an additional month's pay for every year of service as severance.

Industry executives said Samsung could carry out further workforce rationalisation in its television and home appliance businesses, with another round of layoffs reportedly possible after the Diwali season. However, the scale and timing of any additional job cuts remain unclear.

For now, Samsung India's smartphone business is reportedly not part of the ongoing layoffs, as the company expects sales to improve during the festive season. The division could be reviewed later depending on business conditions, according to industry sources.
