India Targets October 2028 to Launch Homegrown Smartphone Brand, Confirms Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is targeting October 23, 2028, to launch a homegrown smartphone brand with domestic design, manufacturing and intellectual property. The initiative aims to compete with Apple and Samsung, building on government-backed PCB design projects and India's growing electronics manufacturing and export sector.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India is targeting October 23, 2028, to introduce a fully homegrown smartphone brand featuring domestic design, manufacturing, and intellectual property. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in Delhi, the minister emphasized that the initiative aims to challenge global consumer electronics giants such as Apple and Samsung.
The announcement follows recent high demand for premium devices in the country, exemplified by strong initial sales of Apple's newly launched iPhone Duo. As per a report by The Economic Times, Vaishnaw set the two-year timeline while highlighting the nation's growing ambitions in the global electronics manufacturing and design value chain. Foundations of Indian Smartphone Design
Vaishnaw noted that the groundwork for a domestic smartphone brand began several years ago through government-backed motherboard design challenges. Two domestic companies successfully developed advanced printed circuit board (PCB) designs, with one firm securing contracts to design and supply a 5G-plus mobile phone for a major United States telecommunications provider.
Building a competitive smartphone requires complex hardware integration, including radio-frequency communication antennas, power management systems, high-density memory, and advanced camera modules within a compact footprint. Officials believe the technological expertise gained over the past three and a half years will enable domestic firms to retain critical intellectual property within the country.
Expansion of India's Electronics Export Sector
The proposed consumer handset initiative aligns with broader growth across India's manufacturing landscape, which has been propelled by national production-linked incentive programs. Electronics has risen to become the country's third-largest export category, with government projections indicating it will soon advance to second place. While manufacturing devices for international brands has expanded significantly, establishing an independent brand requires overcoming established consumer ecosystems and distribution networks. The next two years will test whether Indian designers and manufacturers can successfully scale production to deliver competitive commercial devices by the 2028 target.
