Scripps Layoffs Hit 27 Senior Executives As Broadcaster Shifts to Regional Operating Model
The E.W. Scripps Company cut 27 senior leadership positions, shifting its broadcast operations into 11 regional territories overseen by general managers to modernize workflow and centralize journalism and revenue. 'Local television is changing, and the way we operate local stations has to change with it,' Adam Symson, the Chief Executive Officer of Scripps said.
The E.W. Scripps Company has restructured its local broadcast television operations, eliminating 27 senior leadership and sales positions across its footprint. The corporate reorganisation divides the company's local TV station operations into 11 distinct regional territories. Under the new model, regional general managers oversee up to four local television markets each, reporting to senior corporate media executives.
Transition to a Regional Operating Model
The shift replaces legacy organisational frameworks with a centralised regional design intended to reduce administrative duplication. While individual newsrooms will maintain local news directors, those directors and station executives will now report to regional general managers based across various territories, reports The Desk. “Local television is changing, and the way we operate local stations has to change with it,” Adam Symson, the Chief Executive Officer of Scripps, said in a statement. “Through this transformation, we are rethinking outdated operating models built for a different era while creating a more technology-forward media company to sustain local journalism and bring more consistency, scale and support across our markets," he added.
Focusing on Journalism and Revenue
Scripps leadership noted that the layout aims to blend local community reporting requirements with enhanced corporate financial efficiency. The broadcaster has increasingly integrated technology-forward methods, including automated production workflows and artificial intelligence tools, across several of its operating markets. “This regional structure aligns leadership to the two areas where focused local execution matters most: journalism and revenue,” Symson said. “Scripps is transforming from a collection of individual stations into a more integrated local media company, with strong news and sales leaders in our markets supported by scale, technology and regional leadership," he said. The newly appointed regional general managers report directly to Vice Presidents of Local Media Anita Helt and Joe Poss, alongside Senior Vice President of Local Media Lyn Plantinga.
