Video Recording Capabilities
The FX5 II can record up to 5K 60fps and 4K 120fps video right away, with 5K 120fps and 4K 240fps recording arriving later through a firmware upgrade.
The camera's headline feature is open gate recording, which uses the entire width and height of the sensor for 3:2 video. This allows creators to use all available pixel real estate of the sensor, making it especially useful for vertical crops since every available vertical pixel can be used. Internal RAW Recording And Dynamic Range
The FX5 II also supports 16-bit linear RAW recording internally, without requiring an external recorder. This means users can capture the full 3:2 output of the sensor in 5K at 60fps now, and 120fps later, in RAW straight out of the camera. The camera uses Sony's professional X-OCN format, with LT, C1, and C2 codec variants offering different compression ratios for more efficient recording.
It is also the first Sony FX camera to feature the company's Dual Gain Shooting function, which combines output from low and high gain values to improve dynamic range and reduce noise. The FX5 II offers three base ISOs of ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800 for better low light performance, and reportedly delivers over 15 stops of dynamic range. Other Key Features
The camera includes AI-based human pose estimation for autofocusing, Auto Tracing White Balance based on visible and IR sensor data, and the ability to disable in-camera noise reduction. A de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses is also available, though it disables autofocus.
Other additions include a bigger 3.5-inch, 2.76 million dot fully articulating touchscreen, an upgrade over the FX3, along with a built-in cooling fan, a larger NP-SA100 battery, dual USB ports for power and data, a wired LAN port, and a new menu system borrowed from Sony's CineAlta cameras.
No Built-In Viewfinder
The FX5 II does not come with a built-in viewfinder. Instead, Sony has announced a new DVF-EL1 detachable viewfinder for the camera, along with an XLR-H2 handle accessory.
Price And Availability
The Sony FX5 II is priced at 4900 USD body only, and 5500 USD with the XLR-H2 handle included. The camera will go on sale in mid-August.
