Aerospace and satellite technology firm SpaceX has closed USD 40 billion in debt financing to purchase graphics processing units (GPUs), Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk confirmed. The capital raise underscores the escalating costs required to build out large-scale artificial intelligence computing infrastructure across the technology sector.

The multi-billion dollar debt transaction is primarily callable debt for GPU procurement, with hardware shipments scheduled to arrive in the first and second quarters of next year. As per a report by Reuters, Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen outlined expectations for capital expenditure between USD 35 billion and USD 40 billion during the fourth quarter. SpaceX Targets 80,000 US Cell Sites, Intensifying Mobile Carrier Battle.

Capital Allocation and Revenue Growth Acceleration

Musk attributed the successful debt deal to SpaceX's investment-grade credit rating and robust cash flows generated by its Starlink satellite constellation and commercial rocket launch divisions. The company reported a 161 percent surge in total revenue to USD 14.58 billion for the third quarter ended 30 September.

A significant portion of that expansion was driven by artificial intelligence operations, which experienced a nearly tenfold increase to generate 7.56 billion USD during the quarter. The revenue figures highlight a structural transition for SpaceX as its heavy investments in advanced computational hardware begin yielding direct commercial returns alongside its core space exploration initiatives.

Tightening Credit Markets and Sector Consolidation

Writing on social media platform X, Musk warned that debt markets have largely restricted capital access for specialized infrastructure firms that lack substantial revenues outside of AI data centres. He predicted widespread consolidation and potential corporate failures among specialized neocloud providers that rely heavily on leasing processing capacity to third-party developers. US, China and Russia Face Off in New UFO Arms Race Over Disclosure.

In addition to acquiring external processors, SpaceX is expanding internal hardware development through Terafab, a joint chip manufacturing venture with Tesla based in Austin. The project aims to produce its first test chip by mid-2027, targeting full volume production by the third quarter of 2028.
