Sridhar Vembu Says AI Could Master Mathematics Within Months, Warns About AI and Software Jobs

Zoho chief scientist Sridhar Vembu has said artificial intelligence could take over large parts of mathematics within months. He also warned that a substantial share of software code may soon be produced competently by AI systems.

AI Impact on Mathematics According to Vembu

Vembu said the portion of mathematics that resembles games such as chess or Go, involving ever cleverer moves within fixed rules, will be conquered by AI. He described this outcome as now evident.

Creating entirely new mathematical systems that humans would find interesting remains much harder, he noted. Humans themselves do this only rarely. For the time being, he added, humans still set the rules.

AI Role in Software Development and Coding

Turning to programming, Vembu said a very large fraction of software code could be produced competently and correctly by AI. The question of correctness is being addressed through formal proof systems such as Lean.

These systems are already used for mathematical theorem proving and could soon be applied to verify code generated by AI. Vembu stressed that AI will not do everything.
