Humanoid Robots Move Beyond Showpiece Demonstrations

Chinese robot makers are increasingly trying to demonstrate practical uses for humanoids rather than relying primarily on crowd-pleasing displays.

At the conference, robots were shown sorting parcels and small objects, moving boxes and loading components in logistics and manufacturing environments. Robotera displayed a humanoid torso mounted on a wheeled base that was sorting parcels. The company said more than 100 of its parcel-sorting robots were operating across 15 warehouses in China.

Leju also demonstrated robots designed for logistics applications, with company officials saying its machines were being used in European factories and Chinese automobile plants.

Robots Pack Mobile Phones On Assembly Lines

Another demonstration focused on manufacturing. DexForce showcased humanoid robots packing mobile phones into boxes on an assembly line. The company said the machines have been deployed since early this year at a Lens Technology factory, which supplies components to companies including Apple and Huawei.

DexForce official Nicole Yang said the robots have millimetre-level operating accuracy and can identify and correct errors, such as a phone being placed at an angle. “In theory, human beings are the most dexterous,” Yang said. “But many workers in factories are unwilling to do this kind of boring work.”

Household Robots Enter Testing Phase

The push toward commercialisation is also extending into homes. X Square Robot, which focuses on household chores, is testing its robots in hundreds of homes this year. The company's longest deployment so far has lasted one month, with gradual commercialisation planned for next year.

The testing is intended to determine how effectively humanoid machines can operate in real household environments beyond controlled demonstrations.

More Than 300 Companies At Beijing Conference

More than 300 mostly domestic companies are attending the World Robot Conference, according to organisers. The event features more than 2,000 exhibits and the launch of over 150 products.

The scale of the conference highlights the rapid expansion of China's robotics sector, particularly in humanoid machines that can potentially perform tasks across factories, warehouses, logistics centres and homes.

Investor Interest In Humanoid Robots Surges

The conference is taking place amid growing investor interest in humanoid robotics, which is increasingly viewed as a potential source of industrial growth for China.

Shares in Unitree, one of China's best-known humanoid robot makers, surged nearly sixfold during its Shanghai trading debut on Wednesday. Its initial public offering was more than 8,000 times oversubscribed by retail investors.

Lumos Robotics and the robotics division of Chinese automaker Chery Automobile have also said they are considering stock-market listings.

China-US Technology Competition

Humanoid robotics is also emerging as an area of technological competition between China and the United States.

Madison Huang, a senior Nvidia executive and daughter of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, made an unannounced visit to the Beijing conference. She watched robot demonstrations and visited a companion-robot booth, where she asked about sensors.

The visit came despite US restrictions on exports of Nvidia's most advanced AI chips to China. US-based vision-system company RealSense, one of the few foreign exhibitors at the conference, said it was developing sales partnerships in China. “We see China as a very strategic market for us,” said Mike Nielsen, the company's chief marketing officer. “It is becoming the center of humanoid technology.”

The robotics industry now faces a key test: proving that humanoid machines can perform useful work consistently and economically at scale. China's rapid development cycle is also putting pressure on suppliers to move quickly.

“The product cycles for robots are more like six to eight months, not three to four years,” Nielsen said. For manufacturers, the next stage will involve turning increasingly realistic and capable robots into reliable commercial products that can operate in real-world environments.
