Thousands of people gathered on the banks of the River Thames in London on Sunday for the first-ever Ganga Aarti in the UK, a traditional Hindu ceremony of light and thanksgiving organised by Chinmaya Mission UK in collaboration with the annual Totally Thames festival.

Titled “Ganga Aarti on the Thames: A Ceremony of Light,” the event was held as part of global celebrations marking 75 years of Chinmaya Mission. It recreated the ethos of the traditional Ganga Aarti performed on the banks of the River Ganges in India, bringing together members of the British Hindu and South Asian communities as well as people from other backgrounds.

Ganga Aarti On Thames Brings Indian Tradition To London

The ceremony was conceived as a symbol of the life-giving flow of nature, knowledge and consciousness, reported PTI. Brahmacharini Shripriya Chaitanya, Resident Teacher of Chinmaya Mission UK, said the ceremony carried the same spirit of gratitude associated with the Ganga Aarti in India.

Why Was Ganga Aarti Held On The Thames?

For Chinmaya Mission, the River Ganges also represents the flow of knowledge. Chaitanya said the event was particularly significant as the organisation marks its 75th anniversary.

“Our founder, Swami Chinmayananda, dedicated his life to bringing the timeless wisdom of Vedanta -- one of the great philosophical traditions of Hinduism -- from the Himalayas into people's everyday lives,” she said.

She added that the London ceremony celebrated the organisation's legacy of knowledge, service and gratitude flowing beyond boundaries.

No Ritual Materials Released Into Thames

Organisers said the ceremony was conducted entirely on land, with no materials from the event placed, poured or released into the River Thames.

The ceremonial lamps remained on the riverbank rather than being floated on the water. Organisers also said measures were taken to reduce waste, minimise single-use plastics and protect the surrounding environment.

“Reverence for nature is not simply an additional theme of Ganga Aarti. The ceremony itself is an expression of gratitude towards Mother Ganga, honoured in Hindu tradition as sacred, life-giving and sustaining,” a Chinmaya Mission spokesperson said.

The organisation said the event was intended to reinforce the message that gratitude towards nature should also be reflected through responsible environmental practices.

Chinmaya Mission Marks 75 Years

The Thames ceremony was attended by senior spiritual leaders and representatives of Hindu organisations and communities from across the UK.

Founded in 1951, Chinmaya Mission is a global movement rooted in Vedanta and has more than 350 locations worldwide.

The Totally Thames festival, meanwhile, has been organised by a trust since 1997 and features arts, environmental, heritage and educational programmes centred on the River Thames.

Ganga Aarti On Thames Could Become Annual Event

The first Ganga Aarti on the Thames was a sell-out event, according to Chinmaya Mission UK.

Organisers said the ceremony could become a regular annual feature, bringing together Hindu tradition, community participation and a message of gratitude and environmental responsibility on the banks of London's River Thames.
