The heatwave will also introduce widespread "tropical nights," during which overnight temperatures in urban centres will remain above 20 degrees Celsius. Forecasters emphasise that these conditions severely impede the body's ability to cool down and recover from daytime exposure.
“The heatwave this week will be a significant weather event, with a Red Extreme Heat warning issued,” said Professor Stephen Belcher CBE, Met Office Chief Scientist. “To see temperatures like this in the UK in June is sobering.
