Angelynn Mock Pleads Guilty In Halloween Murder Of Mother
The plea follows months of legal proceedings over Mock’s mental competency. In January, Judge Jeffrey Goering ruled that Mock was not mentally competent to stand trial and ordered her to Larned State Hospital for evaluation and treatment. A judge later reversed that ruling in July, finding Mock competent to proceed. She then entered her guilty plea rather than go to trial.
Police Found Mother With Multiple Stab Wounds
The case began shortly before 8 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2025, when Wichita police responded to a reported stabbing at the home in the 1500 block of East Crowley.
Officers found Mock outside the residence with cuts on her hands. Inside, Avers was found unresponsive in her bed with multiple stab wounds. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:26 a.m., according to police records. Mock was treated at a hospital before being taken into custody.
Mock Said She Believed Her Mother Was The Devil
According to the probable cause affidavit, Mock gave investigators accounts of the events that differed in some details. She said she went to her mother’s room to discuss an upcoming job interview at KSN and found Avers sharpening knives.
Mock claimed her mother came at her with a blade and that the two fought. She said she overpowered Avers, pushed her back and then grabbed a knife. Mock told investigators that her mother said, “I know you’re f–king Jesus Christ,” and that she was spewing “venom” as Mock tried to back away. Mock said she then pinned her mother down and stabbed her, claiming she had no choice but to do so to save herself.
“I had to kill her, she wasn’t going to stop,” Mock said, according to the affidavit. Mock also told police that she believed her mother was the devil. “I’d kill that bitch to have my mom back any day. I don’t even know who she is anymore. I know, I believe she’s the devil,” Mock said, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit said officers found multiple kitchen knives and a cheese grater laid out on a pillow beside Avers’ body. Blood was found on the utensils, while the top sheet had at least 12 holes consistent with knife wounds.
Stepfather Described History Of Delusional Behavior
Mock’s stepfather, Barry Avers, told investigators that Mock had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and had experienced delusions and depression, according to the affidavit. He said Mock was taking medication, although he did not know what medication she had been prescribed or whether she was taking it as directed.
Barry also described a history of angry outbursts and delusional episodes. According to the affidavit, Mock had claimed that people around her were “robots” and “not real people.” He also told investigators that Mock described herself as spiritual, said she spoke to God and at times called herself the Anti-Christ. On one occasion, she told him: “I could blow everyone up if needed to.”
Years earlier, an explosive outburst resulted in police being called and Mock being held at a psychiatric hospital for about two weeks, according to the affidavit. Barry said the most recent episode he could recall occurred three or four weeks before the killing, when Mock became angry with family members during a card game.
Despite those incidents, he described Mock and her mother as having a close relationship with the normal tensions of a mother and daughter.
Former TV News Career
Mock previously worked as a morning news anchor at KTVI in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015 and later worked in television in Oklahoma City. She was working in sales for a data management software company when her mother was killed.
Records also show that Mock previously worked as a sports reporter at KLKN in Lincoln, Nebraska, from November 2002 to February 2004.
Sentencing Set For October
Mock is scheduled to be sentenced at 11 a.m. on Oct. 5, 2026. Under the plea agreement, she faces a presumptive life sentence with eligibility for parole after 25 years. The guilty plea brings the criminal case to the sentencing stage after the competency proceedings had temporarily halted the prosecution.
The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office had initially charged Mock with first-degree murder after investigators determined that Avers died from multiple stab wounds.
