Donald Trump Confuses India With Brazil, Claims 125 Million Voted in ‘Indian Presidential Election’

US President Donald Trump appeared to confuse India with Brazil while discussing Brazil’s presidential election, claiming that 125 million people voted in an Indian presidential poll. India does not hold a direct presidential election, with the President elected by an electoral college of elected representatives.

US President Donald Trump appeared to mistakenly refer to Brazil’s presidential election as an election in India, claiming that 125 million people had voted in an Indian presidential poll and that results were announced on the same day. His post on Truth Social was factually incorrect, as India does not hold a direct presidential election in which citizens vote for the President.

Trump wrote that “125 million people voted today in the first round of India's presidential election” and claimed that the results were declared shortly after voting ended.

Trump Appears To Confuse India With Brazil

Trump’s comments came as Brazil held the first round of its presidential election. The contest is headed for a runoff after no candidate secured the required majority. Donald Trump Predicts Short-Lived Iran Conflict, Says Situation ‘Working Out Very Well’.

In India, the President is elected indirectly by an electoral college comprising elected members of Parliament and state legislatures. Indian citizens do not directly vote for the President.

Brazil’s presidential election is conducted through direct voting, with voters choosing their preferred candidate. Trump Takes Swipe at US Elections

Following his reference to India, Trump turned his attention to the US electoral system and claimed that election results in several American cities and states can take weeks to be calculated.

Trump also alleged that voting in the US is “CORRUPT” and linked his comments to the upcoming US midterm elections.

The US midterm elections will determine control of the House of Representatives and Senate, along with several state-level offices. Voters are scheduled to elect all 435 members of the House and 35 senators.

Trump Has Previously Praised India’s Election System

This is not the first time Trump has referred to India’s electoral system while discussing elections in the United States.

In August, he cited India’s voter identification system while arguing for stricter election-related rules in the US. He also referred to the large number of voters who participated in India’s recent general election and highlighted the comparatively small share of votes cast through postal ballots.

Trump’s latest post, however, appears to have confused India’s electoral system with Brazil’s presidential election, where citizens directly vote for their preferred presidential candidate.
