Multiple people were killed, including the suspected gunman, and several others were injured after an active shooter incident at a busy commercial area in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday, August 1, authorities said. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community, while investigators continue working to identify the shooter and determine a motive.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks did not provide an exact number of fatalities as authorities worked to notify next of kin. Several injured people were being treated at local hospitals, and officials said the investigation remains active.

Shooting Reported at Busy Shopping District

Officers responded around 2 p.m. local time to reports of a gunman at an In-N-Out Burger on Blue Lakes Boulevard, located within a bustling shopping district. Nearby businesses and shopping centers reported lockdowns during the incident as law enforcement responded. Police were still trying to determine the shooter’s identity and motive.

Witness Describes Chaotic Scene

Lane Koehn, 34, told The Associated Press he was at a stoplight near the In-N-Out when he saw a person with an AR-style rifle emerge from the drive-thru. A man with a pistol started firing at the shooter.

He then saw someone in an In-N-Out uniform drag a person, also uniformed, bleeding from a gunshot wound in her chest across the parking lot. The employee, Koehn and the man with the pistol stayed until paramedics arrived for her.

“She was pretty bad off, but I don’t know. I hope she made it,” Koehn said. Koehn said he was told by police to evacuate because the shooting was still active. He also said the shooter fired at least three or four rounds, and it was not clear whether or not anyone in particular was targeted.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said there was no ongoing threat to the public but declined to release the exact number of fatalities while families were being notified.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little urged residents to avoid the area and support first responders. “Idahoans, join me in keeping the Twin Falls community in your prayers as law enforcement and first responders respond to an active shooter situation near In-N-Out,” Gov. Brad Little said in a social media post. “Please avoid the area and follow directions from law enforcement as they work to keep everyone safe.”

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the suspect's identity and motive. Twin Falls, home to about 56,000 people, is located roughly 130 miles southeast of Boise.
