What Happened At The Lee’s Summit Intersection

Video obtained by KCTV5 shows two vehicles traveling southbound on 291 Highway at Chipman Road. A maroon car was waiting at the light, preparing to make a left-hand turn, when a truck pulled up behind it.

What appears to be multiple people got out of the truck and opened fire on the maroon car. The driver of the maroon car then drove away, and the shooters got back into the truck and left. The entire incident unfolded in about eight seconds, according to the video. US Park Shooting: Police Officer Killed, Another Injured While Responding to Domestic Dispute.

Kelly Johnson with the Lee's Summit Police Department said the driver was shot four times and was transported to a local hospital. Three other nearby cars were also struck by gunfire. No one in those vehicles was shot, but one person was hurt by flying glass and was also being treated, Johnson said. Law enforcement reported two victims were identified: one was treated at a hospital with gunshot wounds and the other for glass shrapnel.

Police Identify Suspect Vehicle

LSPD stated officers were able to identify an original suspect vehicle - a dark gray F-150 - with witness ID and Flock cameras. Police said witnesses and FLOCK cameras were able to identify the original suspect vehicle as a dark gray Ford F-150 with a vanity license plate from California. That vehicle was last seen making a U-turn onto northbound 291.

“With that information, we can identify and use our FLOCK cameras to pinpoint exactly what vehicle it was and the license plate for that,” Johnson said. Johnson said investigators have located FLOCK camera images of the suspect vehicle in the area but have not yet located the vehicle itself.

“FLOCK is a tool for us, so obviously it’s not something that we use to make a conviction or do anything like that,” she said. “It’s like any other tool. A eyewitness is a tool. We have a lot of things. So license plate readers are a tool for us. It can put certain vehicles that match a description in the area of a crime at the time that the crime occurred. So we use that just as a tool as part of the investigation, obviously, not the full investigation. So it’s very helpful.” Johnson said police will release more information on the truck or the suspects as it becomes available.

Police Say Shooting Was Not Random

Investigators believe the shooting was not a random attack. “We believe it’s an isolated event between two people who have knowledge of one another — that they’re not just out targeting victims who have no idea what’s coming,” Johnson said. “So at this point, we don’t believe that there is any concern for safety with this particular incident.”

Johnson said detectives believe there is some knowledge between the parties involved but do not yet know the nature of that relationship. “We don’t have a lot of violent crime here in Lee’s Summit,” Johnson said. “This is not something that happens very often. Our community is safe. Our citizens are safe. But it’s always important to be vigilant in the area that you’re at and what’s going on around you.”

Authorities said they are continuing to search for the suspects. Police are asking anyone who may have information or eyewitness accounts to contact investigators.

Police Issue Warning To Public

Johnson said eyewitness accounts remain important to the investigation. Police are asking anyone who sees the vehicle to call 911 rather than approach it. “If you see the vehicle, call 911,” Johnson said. “And don’t put yourself in a position to be harmed in any way.”

Police initially closed a busy stretch of highway as officers investigated the shooting. The highway has since been allowed to reopen. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional information about the suspects or the vehicle will be released as it becomes available.
