The shooting took place in the parking lot, but not inside the school itself, according to police. Law enforcement officers arrived within minutes to cordon off the perimeter and assess the immediate area, quickly locating both individuals involved in the incident. Suspect Detained and Firearm Recovered by Omaha Police
The suspect is now in custody. Cops said the victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury and that a firearm was recovered. First responders provided on-scene medical assistance to the injured person before transferring them for further clinical care. “This was an isolated incident, and there is no additional threat to students,” the police spokesperson added.
Following the initial call, administrators placed the facility under temporary safety protocols while police units established control outside the building. “The school was briefly in ‘secure’ status, but has returned to normal operations while officers investigate the incident,” the spokesperson said. Omaha Public Schools also addressed families through an official dispatch. “Student and staff safety is our number one priority. Students and staff are safe. We will continue school as normal,” Omaha Public Schools said in a statement on their website at 9:20 a.m. ET.
“We are continuing to work with law enforcement regarding the situation outside our school. We will share more details as they become available,” the statement continued. Burke High School did not respond immediately to request for comment. Investigators remain on the scene to gather evidence and review surveillance footage to determine the events leading up to the gunfire.
