Rabies Alert in North Carolina: Nearly 300 Evaluated After Contact With Infected Baby Goats at Petting Zoo

Health officials in North Carolina have warned that nearly 300 people may have been exposed to rabies after interacting with infected baby goats from a mobile petting zoo during public and private events over a four-week period. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), in coordination with county public health agencies, issued notifications urging anyone who touched or handled baby goats from the Farm Adventures mobile petting zoo between July 28 and August 27 to seek immediate medical evaluation.

Health authorities confirmed that at least three baby goats from the Harmony, North Carolina-based business tested positive for rabies, with a fourth presumed infected. Cause and Multi-County Exposure

According to state officials, the goats were likely infected after a rabid skunk entered their pen in late July. Before symptoms fully manifested or were identified, the petting zoo hosted or participated in at least 10 events across six North Carolina counties, including Mecklenburg, Iredell, Watauga, Burke, Davie, and Durham.

Venues included a back-to-school event in Lexington, an assisted living facility in Statesville, and a community picnic in Mocksville. Because baby goats are frequently bottle-fed, snuggled, and handled closely by visitors, officials warned that saliva from the animals could have come into contact with open cuts, eyes, noses, or mouths.

Post-Exposure Treatment Efforts

State and local public health teams are actively tracing event attendees and coordinating post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for individuals who had direct contact with the goats. As of early September, public health assessments indicated nearly 300 individuals met the threshold for potential exposure, with over 200 recommended for preventative treatment. Rabies is a near-fatal viral infection once clinical symptoms appear, but prompt administration of post-exposure rabies vaccines and immune globulin is virtually 100% effective in preventing the disease. No human cases connected to the exposure have been reported.

Farm Operations and Ongoing Measures

The owner of Farm Adventures has cooperated fully with authorities, according to health officials. The remaining animals on the facility's property have been placed under official quarantine as a precaution, though state health authorities determined no other animals pose an ongoing risk to the public.
