A Maryland man was taken into police custody following a bizarre sequence of events in which he allegedly stole a 3.5-month-old kitten from an adoption center and immediately attempted to rob a nearby bank, handing the animal to an employee during the incident.

According to Prince George's County police and local store workers, the suspect entered a Pet Supplies Plus store on Baltimore Avenue. Surveillance footage showed the man, dressed in a light-colored T-shirt and a black beanie, using a key to unlock the cat adoption area before fleeing the store with a tuxedo kitten named Magnolia. Store employees reported that the suspect had visited the shop daily for approximately two weeks leading up to the incident, consistently focusing his attention on the young cat. After running out of the pet store, the man walked across the parking lot to a neighboring PNC Bank branch. Upon entering, he handed the stolen kitten to a bank employee to hold before passing a note to a teller demanding cash. Police officers responded rapidly to the scene, initially drawing the attention of pet store volunteers who were preparing to report the cat theft. “I saw all of these police cars and thought, 'Wow, that's a heck of a response for a stolen cat,'” said Stephanie Stullich of Beltsville Community Cats, a local rescue organization. “But then I realized they all were going down to the bank. They came back out a few minutes later and said, 'Yes, there is a cat inside the bank.'” The suspect was arrested inside the bank before he could successfully obtain any money. Magnolia the kitten was recovered unharmed and was found resting safely in the bank manager’s office. Beltsville Community Cats later confirmed that Magnolia has been returned to the adoption center and is currently waiting for a permanent home.
