The Battle Creek, Michigan-based cereal maker said it has now identified fruit- and vegetable-based juices capable of producing the distinctive colors seen in popular products like Froot Loops and Apple Jacks, and has invested in new equipment to support the transition to natural coloring agents.
Company Also Dropping Artificial Preservative BHT
Alongside the shift away from synthetic dyes, WK Kellogg said it is removing BHT, an artificial preservative, from the small number of its cereals that still contain the ingredient.
Doug VanDeVelde, WK Kellogg's Chief Growth Officer, said in a statement, "More and more consumers are looking for foods made with simple, recognizable ingredients and we are proud to meet those expectations even sooner than planned." Years of Pressure From Consumers and Regulators
WK Kellogg has faced sustained pressure over the years to eliminate artificial ingredients from its cereals, a step it has already taken in markets such as Canada. In 2024, dozens of protesters gathered outside the company's headquarters and submitted petitions bearing 400,000 signatures demanding the removal of artificial dyes and BHT.
That pressure has intensified under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has pushed food companies to phase out petroleum-based artificial dyes. Last August, WK Kellogg also signed an agreement with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton committing to "permanently remove toxic dyes" from its cereals by the end of 2027. Retailers Adding to the Push
Major retailers have also been pressuring cereal makers to act faster. Earlier this year, Target said it would stop selling cereals containing artificial colors by the end of May, while Walmart has committed to removing artificial colors from its store-brand products by January 2027.
