The city has experienced more than 24 hours of continuous rainfall, exceeding 150 mm (5.91 inches) in some parts of the capital, BBC reported. People have been urged to stay at home, and those living close to the city's network of canals have been advised to move their belongings to upper floors. Bangkok Flood: Canals Overflow as Drainage Systems Overwhelmed
Thunderstorms are common in Thailand at this time of year, but extreme weather in recent days has inundated Bangkok's drainage system, causing traffic chaos on roads that are already famously congested. Governor Chadchart noted that the eastern sectors of the capital have borne the brunt of the deluge.
"The rain keeps falling and we are doing our best. We are trying to pump the water out, but the water in canals are full... The risk areas are those who live near canals. Every canal is now filled," Chadchart said, as reported by AFP.
Videos posted on social media showed cars inundated with water and emergency services providing assistance across submerged thoroughfares. In response to displacement in vulnerable low-lying neighborhoods, the Bangkok City Administration confirmed it has opened a shelter for evacuees.
Residents Compare Inundation to Historic 2011 Crisis
The persistent rainfall has disrupted daily commerce and left canal-side communities stranded in waist-deep water. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67-year-old who lives near a canal just north of central Bangkok, told the AFP news agency: "The water keeps coming in. It's hard to go out now. It's like at my waist level now."
"I cannot go anywhere. I have been closing my shop for two days now," she added. She said water levels in the city appeared to be worse than in 2011, when Bangkok was impacted by nationwide flooding. Hundreds were killed across Thailand then in an extreme weather event that lasted for three months. So far, no casualties have been reported in Bangkok from this latest flooding.
Forecast Warns of Continued Rainfall Across Central Thailand
The rain is expected to continue into Sunday, raising fears that more canals could burst their banks. The government has issued an emergency advisory for people living near canals to move possessions to higher ground as water levels continue to swell.
The Thai Meteorological Service has forecast more heavy rain through the week, with the weather agency forecasting thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rain over the weekend. Forecasters noted that while the low-pressure system driving the downpours will persist over the coming days, it is expected to gradually track towards central Thailand.
