Anwar Ibrahim’s Bollywood Connection

Anwar has previously displayed his fondness for Bollywood during engagements with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During Modi’s visit to Malaysia, Anwar shared an official video montage of the visit set to ‘Bole Chudiyan’, the popular song from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

His latest performance of ‘Khwab Ho Tum Ya Koi Haqeeqat’ added another Bollywood reference to his diplomatic interactions with India. The song, originally sung by Kishore Kumar, is among the well-known numbers from the 1965 Hindi film Teen DeviyanPM Modi Opens BRICS Summit 2026, Says India Is Building Economic Bridges Amid Trade Barriers.

During his current India visit, Anwar also praised the country for its civilisation, culture and history. His comments came as the two countries sought to strengthen their bilateral relationship during the Malaysian prime minister’s visit. Anwar also said he hoped that outstanding issues between India and Pakistan would be resolved.

Anwar’s visit has carried significance beyond diplomatic engagements and cultural exchanges. India and Malaysia elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the visit. The two countries also signed several agreements covering areas including digital technology and tourism. The agreements are part of efforts to expand cooperation between the two countries across multiple sectors.

India-Malaysia relations had faced tensions in 2019 after then Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad criticised India’s decision to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The episode created strains in bilateral ties at the time. Anwar’s visit has since marked a renewed effort to strengthen relations between New Delhi and Kuala Lumpur.

The elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the signing of agreements in key areas have provided fresh momentum to the relationship.

Anwar became Malaysia’s prime minister in 2022, making his current trip his first official visit to India since taking office. Alongside discussions on bilateral cooperation, his visit has also highlighted cultural links between the two countries. His performance of ‘Khwab Ho Tum Ya Koi Haqeeqat’ offered a lighter moment during a visit otherwise focused on diplomacy, regional issues and strengthening India-Malaysia ties.
