In a major breakthrough during rescue operations following catastrophic flooding, joint search forces pulled two workers alive from inside a tunnel at the Trishuli–3 'A' Hydroelectric Project. The survivors, identified as 45-year-old Mechanical Supervisor Kabir Maharjan and 30-year-old Mechanical Foreman Sanjay Sah, had been trapped underground for nine days following an ice-rock avalanche and flash flood on August 26.

The breakthrough occurred early Friday morning when security personnel stationed near the submerged structure detected human voices echo through the tunnel shaft. Authorities reported that while Maharjan suffered severe physical fatigue and limited mobility in his extremities, Sah's condition remains stable.

The disaster began late last month when an ice-and-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered rapid flash flooding along the Trishuli River basin. The sudden surge of water, mud, and debris inundated underground infrastructure across several hydroelectric projects in the region, trapping personnel inside.

The successful extraction of Maharjan and Sah has provided renewed urgency to the search efforts. Rescuers on site confirmed hearing additional responses from deeper inside the tunnel network. The broader disaster across the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river corridors remains one of Nepal's most devastating climate-triggered events in recent memory. According to updated figures from disaster management authorities, the overall death toll from the flash floods and landslides has climbed past 1,200 people, with over 4,000 individuals still missing or unaccounted for. A substantial portion of the missing includes foreign workers, pilgrims, and hydro-project personnel trapped across at least six affected hydroelectric power plants along the river system, where combined army, security, and specialized technical forces continue multi-site rescue operations.
