Nearly 600 children remain unaccounted for in Nepal's northern and central districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot following catastrophic flash floods, as the country's overall death toll climbed to 1,282 on Friday. Traced to a Transboundary Glacier Surge

The disaster was triggered on August 26 by a high-altitude ice-rock avalanche originating near the Nepal-Tibet border. According to official data released by Nepal Police, 359 bodies have been recovered in Chitwan. Additionally, 218 bodies were retrieved in Nawalparasi East, 208 in Nawalparasi West, 185 in Nuwakot, 140 in Rasuwa, 72 in Gorkha, 60 in Dhading, and 38 in Tanahu.

Search for Missing Students and Staff

Local authorities and educational administration units report that between 580 and 630 students remain unaccounted for in the two primary hit districts. Figures compiled by Education Development and Coordination Units (EDCUs) estimate 280 missing children in Rasuwa and between 300 to 350 missing in neighboring Nuwakot. In Nuwakot’s Bidur Municipality alone—which houses 170 public and private educational institutions—roughly 250 children have been untraced since the waters hit.

"The situation on the ground is deeply distressing," said Navaraj Sapkota, a school inspector for Bidur Municipality's education unit. "In some cases, we have located surviving parents who cannot find their children, while in other instances, surviving students are searching for missing parents." Data from the Ministry of Education indicates that 22 schools across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading were impacted, with 12 facilities completely destroyed. Official records also confirm 22 teachers and school staff members remain missing across Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

Hindered Search and Relief Operations

Search and rescue operations are being spearheaded by a joint command of Nepal's security forces. However, efforts continue to face logistical hurdles due to broken landlines, destroyed cell towers, and washed-out bridges that leave several remote mountain settlements accessible only by air. Verification of the exact casualty status among missing students and school personnel remains ongoing as search teams clear debris downstream.
