Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday, October 9, renewed his support for US President Donald Trump’s bid for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with helping prevent a wider conflict between India and Pakistan following their military escalation in May 2025.
In a post on X, Sharif said Trump had played a “historic role in advancing peace in South Asia” and helped bring the two nuclear-armed neighbours “back from the brink” by facilitating a ceasefire that, according to him, remained in force.
“In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Pakistan had nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Sharif wrote, adding that Islamabad hoped Trump’s efforts to promote peace and prevent regional conflict would receive recognition this time.
Sharif’s remarks came after the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on Friday. Trump was not selected for the award. Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay Awarded 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for Advancing International Law.

Why Pakistan Nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize
Pakistan announced its decision to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in June 2025, citing his diplomatic engagement during the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May that year. The escalation followed cross-border strikes and triggered a serious period of hostilities between the two countries. The fighting ended with a ceasefire, although New Delhi and Islamabad have offered different accounts of Washington’s role in securing the understanding.
Pakistan credited Trump with helping broker the ceasefire. India, however, maintained that the understanding was reached directly between the two countries’ military authorities and rejected claims of third-party mediation.
Sharif’s latest statement reiterates Islamabad’s position that Trump’s intervention helped prevent further escalation between the neighbouring countries.
Who Won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize?
Trump did not win the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her efforts to promote democratic rights and achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
In January 2026, Machado presented her Nobel medal to Trump during a meeting at the White House. The gesture did not transfer the Nobel Peace Prize itself, which remained awarded to Machado.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. While eligible individuals and institutions can submit nominations, the committee keeps the identities of nominees and nominators confidential for 50 years.
