At least five people have been confirmed dead and 21 others injured following two earthquakes that struck the mountainous Chupaca province in Peru’s Junín region on Saturday night. Emergency teams were swiftly deployed to the affected areas, particularly the district of Chongos Bajo, to conduct search, rescue, and damage assessment operations.

As per a report by Hindustan Times, the quakes recorded magnitudes of 5.1 and 3.7 and occurred at depths of 24 km and 18 km respectively. Impact on Infrastructure and Heritage

The seismic activity has caused significant disruption across several districts in the region. Beyond the tragic loss of life, authorities have reported power outages impacting local residents.

Several historic religious monuments and heritage sites in the area also sustained damage during the tremors. Local officials are currently working to assess the full extent of the structural destruction while continuing the recovery efforts in the hardest-hit district of Chongos Bajo.

While the identities of the deceased have not yet been released by officials, emergency response teams remain active in the field.
