At least five people have been confirmed dead and 21 others injured following two earthquakes that struck the mountainous Chupaca province in Peru’s Junín region on Saturday night. Emergency teams were swiftly deployed to the affected areas, particularly the district of Chongos Bajo, to conduct search, rescue, and damage assessment operations.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, the quakes recorded magnitudes of 5.1 and 3.7 and occurred at depths of 24 km and 18 km respectively. Meanwhile, as per a report by Reuters, the United States Geological Survey recorded the primary tremor at a magnitude of 5.5 with a depth of 10 kilometres.
