A slow-moving Typhoon Dolphin approached southwestern Japan on Friday, August 7, prompting evacuation orders for nearly 260,000 residents and the cancellation of more than 500 flights as authorities warned of violent winds, heavy rain and high waves. The Category 1 storm was moving toward islands between the Kyushu region and Okinawa prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The storm was reported to have maximum sustained winds of 144 kph (89.5 mph), with gusts reaching 198 kph, raising concerns over structural damage, flooding and travel disruptions. Authorities warned that the typhoon could maintain its strength as it approached Okinawa prefecture. Japan Earthquake: 7.1-Magnitude Quake Rocks Kyushu, Dozens Injured or Missing; Tsunami Advisory Lifted.

Evacuation Orders Issued in Kagoshima and Okinawa

Authorities issued evacuation orders for around 260,000 people across Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures as Typhoon Dolphin moved closer to the region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that strong winds could damage or collapse some structures, while a possible linear rain band, a narrow area of intense rainfall and thunderstorms, could increase the risk of flooding. The slow movement of the storm has raised concerns that some areas could face prolonged exposure to heavy rainfall and strong winds. South Korea Heatwave: Yangsan Hits Record 42.5C, Authorities Urge People To Stay Indoors.

Flights Cancelled, Toyota Suspends Factory Operations

The storm disrupted transportation across southern Japan, with more than 500 flights cancelled due to safety concerns. Automaker Toyota suspended operations at nine factories on Friday as the typhoon approached. Authorities advised residents to remain alert for changing weather conditions and follow evacuation instructions.

Kyushu Faces Additional Challenges After Earthquake

The storm is also affecting parts of Kyushu, including Kumamoto prefecture, which is still recovering from last week’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake. Around 6,700 residents in Kumamoto remain in evacuation centres after many homes were damaged or collapsed during the earthquake. The arrival of Typhoon Dolphin has raised concerns about additional pressure on communities already dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.

Heatstroke Warning Issued Alongside Storm Alerts

Despite the approaching typhoon, the weather agency also warned of heatstroke risks in some areas. Temperatures were expected to reach around 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of the region, creating additional health concerns for residents and those staying in evacuation centres.

Officials are continuing to monitor Typhoon Dolphin’s path and intensity as it approaches southern Japanese islands. Residents have been advised to prepare for strong winds, flooding risks and possible disruptions as emergency agencies remain on alert.
