Rescue Operation
According to eyewitnesses cited by VN Express, nearby tourist boats were the first to respond and reached the scene within five minutes after spotting the capsized vessel.
A boat owner involved in the rescue said several passengers were trapped inside the overturned speedboat, making rescue efforts difficult. "Only a few people were brought out conscious," a boat owner told VN Express.
Authorities said 21 people were rescued, while all those who died were recovered from the scene. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The boat owner said the sea off An Thoi was rough at the time of the accident despite there being no rain. Other tourist boats, however, were still operating in the area.
Following the incident, the An Thoi Border Guard deployed two vessels and 35 personnel to assist rescue operations alongside the navy, coast guard and other emergency services.
A representative of Ocean Pear Island Company said the speedboat was transporting tourists on an island-hopping excursion. According to VN Express, the captain, who is in his 50s, had several years of experience operating passenger boats.
Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the accident. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the speedboat capsizing near Phu Quoc Island.
