According to an EU Council official, this was the first time in the institution's history that a baby attended a ministerial meeting.
Pourmokhtari recently returned from parental leave, while her husband is currently on leave until Sweden's general election in September. How Sweden's Parental Leave System Works
Sweden offers one of the world's most generous parental leave policies. Parents receive 480 days, or about 16 months, of paid leave for each child.
Out of these, 90 days are reserved exclusively for each parent and cannot be transferred. If either parent does not use their allotted days, they are forfeited. The policy, often called the "dad months," encourages fathers to play an active role in childcare.
The remaining leave can be shared between both parents, giving families flexibility while promoting gender equality in the workplace.
Why Flexible Parental Leave Matters
Pourmokhtari urged governments to adopt more flexible parental leave policies and make childcare more affordable.
She said such policies create long-term value by supporting families and reducing workplace burnout. According to her, the benefits go beyond economics and help build healthier societies.
Fellow Ministers Welcome the Move
The minister's decision received support from colleagues at the meeting.
Poland's Deputy Climate Minister Krzysztof Bolesta said the baby's presence did not disrupt discussions.
"I think it's great. It's not a handicap, it's just a part of life," he said.
Sweden's Youngest Cabinet Minister
Pourmokhtari became Sweden's youngest cabinet minister when she joined the government in 2022 at the age of 26. Now 30, her appearance at the EU meeting has reignited debate across Europe about family-friendly workplaces and the need to make public life more compatible with parenthood, particularly for women in leadership positions.
