India News | Assam: One Arrested in Guwahati for Impersonating CBI Officer to Extort Money from People

Guwahati (Assam) [India] August 19 (ANI): A person was arrested from the Jalukbari area here for allegedly extorting money from people impersonating a CBI officer and fake police uniforms, I-cards, badges and toy pistols were seized from his possession, police said on Monday.

The accused identified as Fayajul Hazarika alias Denish (26), who had also collected money from gullible people by assuring them of jobs, was arrested on Sunday night, said Guwahati Commissioner of Police (CP) Diganta Barah.

A team from the Jalukbari police outpost apprehended the accused who impersonated a CBI Officer using police uniforms, I-cards, badges, toy pistols etc., the CP said, adding his accomplice namely Gautam Saikia alias Ayan was also apprehended as the second accused person who had allowed the use of his vehicle which was also seized.

"During the search of his room at Six Mile, one pair of police uniform, 2 toy pistols and I-Card of CBI, badges etc., were recovered. His actual name is Fayajul Hazarika alias Denish (26) S/O- Fakaruddin, R/O-Kobasuba, PS- Sipajhar, Dist- Darang and he identified himself as Denish Hazarika, CBI Officer. He impersonated for the purpose of extortion and had also collected money from the gullible people and assured them of jobs," the Guwahati CP said.

The senior police officer further said that, in one such incident, he took money from Afzal Hussain of Garigaon and assured him to give the job to his son.

"The accused had also offered to provide jobs to others. The accused is a habitual thug who identifies himself in many bogus forms and has operated in similar manner in the entire the city for last seven months. Recently he took a rented room at Six Mile area where he had identified himself as Assam Police personnel," the officer said.

In this regard, a case has been registered at Jalukbari Police Station, the top police officer said.

Necessary legal steps have also been initiated, he added. (ANI)
