New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): After the Congress Screening Committee meeting was held in the national capital on Monday, party's general secretary KC Venugopal said that the main motive is to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party in in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and General Secretary KC Venugopal convened a crucial meeting at the AICC headquarters to strategize for the upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

When asked on alliance for upcoming state elections, party's general secretary KC Venugopal says, "Wherever our State Committee is there, they are planning for alliances. Our main motive is that all 4 states should defeat BJP."

The Congress Screening Committee (CSC) members, along with General Secretaries and in-Charges, were present for the discussions.

In a statement following the meeting, Lok Sabha MP KC Venugopal expressed confidence in the party's prospects stating "We are fully geared up for the upcoming round of elections. There is palpable anger against the BJP and its allies, and we are confident that we will emerge victorious and fulfill the people's wishes for a pro-poor, pro-people government in each of these states."

The Assembly elections for Haryana will be held in a single phase on October 1 and the polling in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases from September 18 to October 1, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Friday.

The dates to file the nominations for the first phase will be on August 27, nominations for the second phase will be on September 5, and September 12 is the last day to file nominations for the third phase of the Jammu and Kashmir elections.

The polling in the UT will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, as per the Election Commission of India. The counting of the votes will take place on October 4.

These are the first assembly elections to be held in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.The Maharashtra elections have been postponed temporarily due to security concerns related to Jammu and Kashmir.

When asked about the Maharashtra election, Rajiv Kumar said that Maharashtra elections will be announced later due to security requirements for Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)
