Amstelveen [Netherlands], August 23 (ANI): The Indian men's team heads into their final Pool E match of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 with their semi-final hopes relying on complex mathematics.

The 1-3 defeat against defending champions and hosts Netherlands left India without a point after their opening match of the second stage, putting them in a difficult position ahead of Monday's do-or-die clash against Argentina at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, according to a Hockey India release.

With little room for error, India will need not only a victory but also favourable results elsewhere to keep their campaign alive.

Netherlands lead Pool E with six points, while England and Argentina are on three points each after Argentina's impressive 3-1 victory over England. India are at the bottom with zero points and a goal difference of -4. With England facing the Netherlands in the other match on Monday, India's fate could ultimately be decided by goal difference if they manage to overcome Argentina.

For India to finish among the top two and reach the semi-finals, they need a significant win against Argentina. A three-goal victory would take India's goal difference to -1 and leave Argentina at -3, with both teams on three points.

According to a Hockey India release, In that scenario, England would have to lose to the Netherlands by at least two goals, which would take their goal difference to -2. India would then finish ahead of both Argentina and England on goal difference, despite all three teams being level on three points.

There is another route, albeit one that requires an even bigger result. If India beat Argentina by four goals, any defeat for England against the Netherlands would be enough to send India through. However, an England defeat is essential, as a draw would take them to four points and put them beyond India's reach.

While the permutations underline the enormity of the task, India's immediate focus will be sharpening their attack in open play. Harmanpreet Singh has once again led from the front, scoring six goals and sharing the tournament's top-scorer spot with Argentina's Tomas Domene. Yet, consistency in scoring field goals has eluded the team, placing additional pressure on penalty-corner conversion.

The forwards will have to shoulder a greater share of the responsibility against an Argentina side brimming with confidence after their win over England. Abhishek has scored twice and Dilpreet Singh once, making them the only Indian forwards to have found the target in the team's four matches so far.

"We have a lifeline to stay in the fight to reach the semifinals. It is quite clear what we have to do," said India's Chief Coach Craig Fulton, as quoted by a Hockey India release. "We need the goals, but at the same time we still need to manage our own game and maintain our structure."

Against Argentina, India will need sharper movement in the final third, greater efficiency in front of goal and a more ruthless approach to chances. The challenge is immense, but with their World Cup campaign on the line, India have no alternative but to go for it with everything they have. (ANI)
