What Has Changed
Under a circular issued by EPFO, employees no longer need to route their online transfer claims through either their previous or current employer for verification, provided certain conditions around UAN and Aadhaar linkage are met. This marks a shift away from the older system, where transfers often stalled for weeks awaiting employer sign-off. The self-service transfer applies in cases where both PF accounts, or Member IDs, are linked to the same UAN allotted on or after October 1, 2017, and where the UAN is Aadhaar-linked. It also extends to accounts linked to different UANs, as long as both were allotted after that date and are linked to the same Aadhaar with matching personal details.
For older accounts allotted before October 1, 2017, the self-service route is still available if the UAN is Aadhaar-linked and personal details such as name, date of birth and gender match across accounts. How To Transfer Your PF Balance Online
Employees can initiate a transfer by logging into the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal using their UAN and password. From the Online Services menu, selecting "One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)" opens the transfer request page, where personal and employment details need to be verified.
Where the account qualifies for the simplified route, the system processes the request using Aadhaar based authentication and an OTP sent to the registered mobile number, without requiring employer approval. A tracking ID is generated once the request is submitted, allowing employees to monitor progress through the "Track Claim Status" option on the portal or via the UMANG mobile app.
In cases that do not meet the eligibility criteria for the automatic route, employees can still choose either their previous or current employer to attest the claim, following the earlier process.
Why This Matters For Job Switchers
Transferring PF balances, rather than withdrawing them, helps employees continue earning interest on their savings and preserves continuous service history, which is important for pension eligibility under the Employees' Pension Scheme. Withdrawing PF before completing five years of continuous service can also trigger tax deductions.
EPFO data shows a rising number of members opting to transfer rather than close their accounts when changing jobs, reflecting growing awareness of the long term benefits of maintaining a single, continuous EPF record.
What Employees Should Keep In Mind
To benefit from the streamlined system, employees need to ensure their UAN is active, linked to Aadhaar, and that their KYC details, including PAN and bank account, are fully updated. Any mismatch in personal details across accounts can still delay or disrupt an otherwise automatic transfer.
While the process has become significantly faster, EPFO advises members to periodically check their passbook to confirm that both EPF and EPS contributions have been correctly reflected following a transfer.
