EPFO Upgrades Unified Member Portal: UAN Activation, Generation Through Portal Discontinued; Here’s How You Can Do It Now
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has upgraded its Unified Member Portal, restoring services after a scheduled maintenance window that kept the platform offline for nearly a week. Along with the redesigned interface, EPFO has discontinued UAN activation and new UAN generation through the portal, shifting both processes entirely to the UMANG app.
EPFO said the upgrade, which involved database consolidation and modernisation of its Claims Processing System, is aimed at making services faster, smoother and more secure for members.
Why The Portal Was Down
EPFO had earlier informed members that the Unified Member Portal would be unavailable while it carried out a planned database consolidation and software upgrade, cautioning that both the Member Interface and Employer Interface, along with all associated online services, would remain inaccessible during this period. The organisation had indicated services would resume by July 3, 2026, and the portal has since gone live with the new design. EPF Scheme 2026: Will Your PF Earn More Than 8.25% Interest? UAN Activation No Longer Available On The Website
The most significant change on the updated portal concerns UAN activation, a step required for members to access online services such as checking balances, viewing passbooks and filing claims. This option has now been removed from the EPFO website entirely.
Here's How You Can Activate Your UAN Now
Members must complete UAN activation through the UMANG app using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT). Here is the process:
Open the UMANG app and navigate to EPFO Services. Select UAN Activation under the UAN Services Through Face Auth section. Enter your 12-digit UAN, Aadhaar number and the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Complete the face scan verification to activate your UAN instantly. EPFO has also stopped new UAN generation through the portal. Employees joining a new organisation can have their employer generate a UAN through the EPF Employer Portal, while individuals can alternatively use the UAN Allotment and Activation service on the UMANG app, which also relies on face authentication.
Death And Pension Claims Still Available On The Portal
Not all services have moved off the website. EPFO has kept death claim and pension claim filing active on the Unified Member Portal. Beneficiaries applying for these claims should ensure their Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active and their bank details are updated before applying.
Applicants may need to submit supporting documents such as the member's death certificate, a cancelled cheque or passbook, and age proof. The portal accepts only PDF files up to 2 MB in size, and file names must not contain spaces.
Part Of A Broader Shift To App-Based Services
The move builds on a pattern EPFO has followed since August 2025, when it began phasing out OTP-based UAN activation on the web portal in favour of Aadhaar Face Authentication through UMANG, citing rising concerns around fraud, identity theft and data misuse under the earlier system.
With this latest change, the UMANG app has effectively become the primary gateway for UAN-related services, reducing the need for members to visit EPFO offices in person for routine account actions.
