Delhi Police tightened security across the national capital on Saturday ahead of the proposed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Authorities intensified vehicle checks at border areas, deployed additional security personnel and imposed restrictions affecting mobile internet, Metro services, road traffic and railway operations.

The protest, backed by Opposition groups over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, is scheduled amid heightened security arrangements. Delhi Police has denied permission for the demonstration, citing procedural issues, previous alleged violations and concerns over law and order. Police teams stepped up vehicle checking at Delhi's entry points, particularly along routes connecting the capital with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Barricades and checkpoints have been established at strategic locations to monitor the movement of vehicles and prevent unauthorised gatherings.

Security has also been strengthened around Jantar Mantar and other sensitive locations in central Delhi. Traffic restrictions and diversions may affect several major roads, depending on the prevailing law-and-order situation. The Delhi Traffic Police identified 30 locations where restrictions and diversions could be implemented from 6 am on October 10. Commuters have been advised to avoid non-essential travel through affected areas and allow additional time for their journeys.

Mobile Internet Suspended Around Jantar Mantar

Delhi Police ordered the suspension of mobile internet services within a 4-km radius of the Janpath–Kartavya Path crossing. The restriction came into effect at 10 pm on October 9 and is scheduled to remain in force until 10 pm on October 10.

The order covers mobile internet services across technologies in the designated area. Parts of Connaught Place, Mandi House, Pragati Maidan, Barakhamba Road, Khan Market, Lodhi Road and Jangpura fall within or near the affected zone. Authorities said the measure was intended to maintain public order during the protest. The restriction is geographically limited to the notified area rather than a blanket mobile internet shutdown across the entire national capital. ‘Aa Rahe Hain Hum Kal’: Abhijeet Dipke Mocks PM Modi Over Train, Metro Curbs Ahead of CJP Protest at Jantar Mantar (Video).

Delhi Metro: Entry and Exit Closed at 45 Stations

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced restrictions at 45 Metro stations ahead of the CJP demonstration. Entry and exit gates at the affected stations were scheduled to remain closed from 9 pm on October 9 until 6 pm on October 10.

Interchange facilities remain available at the affected stations, except at New Delhi Metro station, according to the reported arrangements. The restrictions followed an initial announcement covering 57 stations, which was subsequently revised. Passengers travelling through central Delhi should check the latest DMRC advisories before leaving. The closures may affect connections to railway stations and other important transport hubs.

Road Closures and Traffic Diversions in Delhi

Traffic movement around Jantar Mantar and parts of central Delhi is likely to be affected by barricading, security checkpoints and diversions. Police have identified 30 locations where traffic restrictions may be introduced according to the security situation.

Major intersections and routes around Mandi House, Jhandewalan, Patel Chowk, Rail Bhawan, Windsor Place and Connaught Place are among the locations identified in traffic-related reports. Vehicle checks at Delhi's borders may also lead to delays for commuters entering the city from neighbouring states. Travellers heading to the airport, railway stations and inter-state bus terminals have been advised to plan their journeys in advance.

Train Cancellations Affect Passengers Travelling to Delhi

Railway services have also been affected by the security arrangements. Several trains arriving at or departing from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations were cancelled ahead of the protest.

Reports also indicated that some long-distance services were rescheduled. Passengers should verify their train's latest status through official railway channels before travelling to the station. The restrictions come amid concerns about the potential movement of large numbers of protesters towards central Delhi.

Why Is CJP Protesting Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar?

The CJP has called for a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls and the SIR exercise. Opposition groups have raised concerns about the deletion of eligible voters, while the Election Commission's electoral-roll revision process has become a major political issue.

The INDIA bloc has also raised the issue of alleged 'vote chori' and demanded action on its concerns. These allegations remain contested and have been a subject of political debate. Delhi Police denied permission for the proposed protest, citing procedural requirements and public-safety concerns. Organisers, meanwhile, have maintained that they intend to exercise their right to peaceful assembly.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as security, transport and traffic restrictions remain in place for the October 10 demonstration.
