The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has expanded its digital services on the UMANG platform, allowing formal sector workers to generate, activate and authenticate their Universal Account Number (UAN) using Aadhaar-based facial recognition, a move that lets new workforce entrants and existing provident fund subscribers complete key account-onboarding steps directly on their mobile phones without visiting regional field offices or depending solely on their employers.

Streamlining UAN Allotment For New Employees

Under the updated framework announced by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, employees entering the formal workforce without a pre-existing retirement account identifier can complete registration through the 'UAN Allotment and Activation' tab within the UMANG app. Users submit their Aadhaar identification and associated mobile number to receive a one-time password (OTP), after which the system checks for duplicate UANs in its database. Subscribers are then asked to verify their identity through the Aadhaar Face RD application using a mobile camera scan. Once facial verification confirms their UIDAI records, the platform generates a UAN and sends it via SMS to the registered contact number. EPFO VISHWAS 2026: Employers Have Till December 28 To Settle Legacy PF Disputes; Check Process.

Mobile Activation For Existing Members

Subscribers who already have a UAN assigned by an employer but have not yet activated their portal credentials can use the 'UAN Activation' facility on the app. The member enters their UAN along with Aadhaar credentials and registered mobile number, and after SMS verification, the platform runs facial authentication through the UIDAI interface. Once the match is confirmed, the UAN is marked active, a temporary login password is sent via SMS, and the member's EPFO profile is updated with UIDAI-verified demographic details and photographs. EPFO Passbook: How To Check Your Monthly PF Contributions and Balance Online.

Updating Records For Active Accounts

For members who already have activated accounts, the app introduces a dedicated module called 'Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs.' This feature lets existing members refresh their biometric validation and sync their latest identity details across central retirement databases, cross-checking user profiles with UIDAI data and updating records without requiring manual document submission at physical centers.

Broader Access To Post-Activation Services

Once accounts are activated, members can access core online services on the unified platform, including monitoring provident fund accumulations and employer contribution histories, downloading digital EPF passbooks for financial planning and tax documentation, submitting and tracking withdrawal or settlement claims, and completing Know Your Customer (KYC) profile updates.

Technical Prerequisites And Digital Infrastructure

Accessing the updated mobile features requires three core components: a valid Aadhaar number, an active mobile connection linked to that number for multi-factor authentication, and the standalone Aadhaar Face RD application installed on the user's smartphone. The UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) platform was built by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) alongside the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) to serve as a centralized digital access point for state and central government citizen services.
