Union Bank Issues Advisory Ahead of 3-Day Bank Strike by UFBU
Union Bank of India warned of potential branch disruptions from September 28 to 30 due to a UFBU strike for a five-day work week and wage demands. Combined with weekend holidays (September 26 and 27), branches face a five-day closure; digital/ATMs remain normal. Scroll below to learn more about the advisory.
Union Bank of India has issued a customer advisory warning that banking operations at its branches may be affected on September 28, 29 and 30, because of a proposed nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The bank said it is making all possible efforts to ensure continuity of essential services and urged customers to plan transactions in advance.
Bank Strike Follows Weekend Holidays
Bank branches could see disruption for five consecutive days from September 26 to 30. September 26 is a scheduled bank holiday as the second/fourth Saturday of the month, and September 27 falls on a Sunday. The three-day strike period immediately follows, creating an extended stretch without regular branch access if the industrial action proceeds as planned. The UFBU, which represents a large share of bank officers and employees, has called the strike primarily to press for a five-day work week (making all Saturdays holidays) along with other pending issues related to wages and incentives. An earlier one-day strike took place on September 11.
Digital and Alternative Channels To Remain Available
In its advisory posted on X (formerly Twitter), Union Bank of India stated that customers can continue to use alternative service channels for routine banking needs. These include mobile banking, internet banking, ATMs and Business Correspondent (BC) points, as well as UPI and other digital channels. The bank advised customers to complete any branch-dependent transactions before the strike period to avoid inconvenience. Similar advisories have been issued by other public sector banks, including the State Bank of India. Bank Strike Alert: Branches Closed 5 Days From September 26 to 30; Know What Stays Open.
Background on the industrial action
The proposed strike forms part of a series of actions by bank unions. Talks between the UFBU and the Indian Banks’ Association have focused on implementing five-day banking, which was discussed in earlier bipartite settlements but still requires government and regulatory clearances. Digital services such as UPI, internet banking and ATMs are expected to function normally during the period, though the exact impact on individual branches will depend on local participation levels. Customers are encouraged to rely on digital options where possible and to check their bank’s official channels for any further updates closer to the dates.
