The concept of remakes is not novel to Bollywood, be it South films or International films, several filmmakers have tried their hands at retelling popular stories. Salman Khan's Bharat is also one of these as it is a remake of the Korean film, Ode To My Father. Directed by Yoon Je-kyoon, the film released in 2014 became a huge success. It revolved around the story of a man separated with his father in the North Korea war and his journey to reunite with him over the years. It became one of the highest grossing films in South Korea and now its Hindi remake, Bharat may also turn out to be a money spinner in the Indian market under the able hands of director Ali Abbas Zafar. Bharat Is NOT the First Salman Khan Film That Has Been Remade From Korean Cinema – Here’s Why!

For the uninitiated, Korean cinema has been a diverse mix of edge-of-the-seat thrillers to moving romantic dramas. With each passing year, Korean cinema has been getting recognition from all over the world and a recent example of that is  Bong Joon-ho's Parasite winning the Palme d’Or honour at Cannes 2019. It became the first South Korean film to win the top honor.

While Ode to My Father is one of the most-appreciated Korean films, there are few other films that would make for amazing Bollywood remakes and we can't help but wonder what sort of a treatment these stories will get at the hands of Indian directors.

Here's looking at Korean films that could be considered for Bollywood remakes:

1. A Tale Of Two Sisters

This Kim Jee-woon is considered to be one of the best horror films among fans of the supernatural genre. The cinematography is on point and with a stellar cast of Soo-jung Im, Geun-young Moon and Jung-ah Yum, the film manages to keep you on the edge-of-your-seat. The film's plot revolves around a girl who reunites with her sister after she returns home from a mental hospital, only to find the ghost of their mother who haunts them. Given his filmography with the suspense thriller genre, we believe someone like Sujoy Ghosh could pull off a film like that in Bollywood. After Bharat, Salman Khan Confirms Working on Another Korean Movie - 'Veteran'

2. A Train to Busan

Bollywood hasn't really explored the Zombie genre yet. Go Goa Gone is probably the only film that comes to your mind when you say Zombies. A Train to Busan directed by Yeon Sang-ho is one of the most popular South Korean zombie apocalypse action thriller. The film has been hailed for its skilled action choreography as well as strong social commentary. Can you imagine how amazing it would be to have a smart Zombie thriller such as this in Bollywood?

3. Memories of Murder

This 2003 South-Korean drama is based on a true story. The crime-thriller revolves around Korea's famed serial murders which took place between 1986 and 1991 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, whose talent was finally recognized at Cannes this year, the film's plot revolves around two rural cops and a special detective who investigate the murders. Infused with dark humour and social satire, Memories of Murder is one of the finest Korean thrillers. Given its genre, it would be suitable for an Indian audience who have an appetite for crime-thrillers.

4. Mother

Another gem from director Bong Joon-ho, Mother stars Hye-ja Kim in a stunning role of a desperate and determined mother searching for the killer who framed her son for murder. The layered film is unpredictable but hits you in the guts with its right moments. With Indian cinema having so many talented actresses out there, this seems like a role that could be beautifully pulled off by someone like Shefali Shah.

While the charm of the original films may never wear off, there's no harm trying to get the best of both worlds by taking a cue or two from Korean cinema and giving it an Indian spin. We think these films would make for great Bollywood remakes. Do tell us your suggestions in comments below!
