The dacoit drama genre is making a return to Bollywood with this week's big release, Sonchiriya. Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee and Ranvir Shorey are playing dacoits or baaghis (rebels), as they are called in the Chambal ravines, in the film, while Bhumi Pednekar plays the female lead of a woman trapped between warring gangs. Ashutosh Rana is cast as the cop trying to end the dacoit menace in the region. The casting itself is making us feel so excited about the film. Kartik Aaryan-Kriti Sanon’s Luka Chuppi or Sushant Singh Rajput-Bhumi Pednekar’s Sonchiriya – Which Movie Are You Most Excited to Watch on March 1? What's even more exciting is that Sonchiriya has been directed by Abhishek Chaubey. If that name doesn't ring a bell for you, then he is the director of acclaimed films like Ishqiya, Dedh Ishqiya and Udta Punjab. The film-maker has a knack of blending gritty drama and black humour, laced with some strong language, in his films. So we are really curious to know what Chaubey has in store for us with Sonchiriya.

Interestingly, we already have a couple of early movie reviews out from prestigious sites like Times of India and Cineblitz. As expected, they are in praise of the movie, especially the direction, the narrative and the performances. Sonchiriya in Legal Trouble! Times of India says, "Sonchiriya is a spiritual puzzle on redemption, remorse and salvation, backed by stellar performances, captivating cinematography and provocative dialogue. Staying true to his style, Abhishek Chaubey gets into the heartlands of India to take a closer, gritty look at those who think they have sinned. What lies beyond their rebellious deeds and what goes on in their minds as they stare death in the face, forms the story."

Cineblitz says, "The filmmaker builds up the suspense and fast-paced action keeps you riveted. A mirror to the society, Sonchiriya is definitely worth a watch, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The film is gritty and gripping both and packs in some of the most powerful action and performances. A desi western, it is totally a must-watch for cinema-lovers especially fans of the genre, as well as the director and its actors. The shouts of ‘Bairi beimaan, baaghi saavdhan!’ reverberate in your ears long after. We told you at the beginning how the filmmaker takes you into the beehad, well after the film you realise that a part of your soul is still left somewhere there."
