Beco Targets Surf Excel and Vim With Bold Ingredient-Transparency Ads; Aditya Ruia Alleges Censorship After Campaign Goes Viral

Sustainable brand Beco has launched a 'David vs Goliath' campaign targeting HUL’s Surf Excel and Vim over ingredient concerns. Beco alleges its ads were removed due to pressure from larger advertisers on vendors. The brand claims its products are free of BIT and LAS chemicals found in the competitors' formulations, sparking an industry debate on fair competition.

Sustainable home-care brand Beco has launched a direct challenge against market heavyweights Surf Excel and Vim, initiating a classic "David versus Goliath" brand war centred on ingredient transparency. The aggressive comparative campaign urges consumers to look past traditional marketing claims and scrutinise the chemical formulations used in everyday household cleaning products.

Conceptualised by creative agency Colloquial, the campaign features two commercial films and billboards that directly juxtapose Beco's products with established staples from Hindustan Unilever (HUL). One film pairs Beco's Laundry Detergent alongside Surf Excel, while the second focuses on Beco's Dishwashing Liquid alongside Vim Liquid.

Shifting Focus From Performance to Formulation

The marketing push is built on the insight that household cleaning purchases are frequently driven by habit and front-of-pack promises rather than informed choices. Instead of competing solely on cleaning power, foam, or fragrance, the campaign shifts the conversation directly to product chemistry. The ads draw attention to specific ingredients identified through independent, NABL-accredited laboratory testing on open-market samples.

Specifically, the campaign highlights the presence of Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) and Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) in Surf Excel Matic Liquid, and LAS in Vim Dishwash Gel. Citing published scientific and regulatory literature from organisations like the OECD, the brand notes that these substances have been linked to potential skin and eye irritation in susceptible individuals. In contrast, Beco positions its own range as a toxin-free alternative formulated entirely without BIT and LAS. Both films conclude with direct comparative messaging, stating: "Jo Vim mein hai, woh Beco mein nahi. Isliye switch to Beco" and "Jo Surf Excel mein hai, woh Beco mein nahi. Isliye switch to Beco".

Challenger Strategy and Pushback

Reflecting on the bold creative direction, Colloquial Co-founders Ishita Misra and Pradyot Mokashi remarked, "Who doesn’t like a good brand war? Especially when it’s a David taking on a Goliath. We just made sure that our David came with sass, without being crass." Beco Co-founder Aditya Ruia emphasised that the objective is to empower consumers with facts rather than fear. "For decades, we have been taught to associate 'clean' with fragrance, foam and powerful advertising claims, without ever being encouraged to question what lies beneath the surface," Ruia said. "At Beco, we make our home-care range without BIT and LAS, and we believe consumers are entitled to know what is in the products they clean their homes with," he added.

We Knew Calling Out Legacy Brands Would Create Discomfort, Says Aditya Ruia

The campaign has already stirred industry debate regarding outdoor advertising and commercial pressures, highlighting the hurdles smaller challenger brands face when confronting legacy giants in the Indian market. The campaign took a controversial turn after Ruia alleged that outdoor hoardings and media placements featuring the campaign were removed despite the absence of any regulatory or legal order. "Not because of a court order. Not because a regulator asked us to withdraw them. But because, as communicated to us, our outdoor vendors, OTT and digital partners were being pressured by a much larger advertiser with far greater commercial weight," Ruia wrote in a post on LinkedIn.
