James Gunn had been fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 last July, as some of his past, offensive tweets came to light. Even though Gunn had apologised publicly for his tweets, Disney and Marvel Studios were in no mood to hire him back. Marvel fans created a huge outrage over the firing and continued to badger the studios to hire him back. Their requests have been now heard, as Disney has rehired James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, as per a report in Deadline. OMG! James Gunn Rehired by Disney-Marvel as Director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3; Will Continue to Direct Suicide Squad 2.

Interestingly James Gunn has already been hired by rival studios Warner Bros and DC to make Suicide Squad 2, and the project is under development. While Gunn cannot back out of this project, Marvel will have to wait for him to finish Suicide Squad 2 first to start work on Guardians of Galaxy 3. Also contrary to some reports, Disney wasn't looking for other directors to take on GOTG franchise, including the hot favourite Taika Waitit (Thor: Ragnarok) and the Russo Brothers (Avengers: EndGame)Avengers: Endgame New Trailer: Tony Stark's Return From the Space and Captain Marvel's Inclusion in the Team Are Just Some of the Many Reasons To Make us Jump With Joy (Watch Video).

We are also waiting for Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the GOTG franchise to react. Bautista has been the most vocal among the Marvel actors in his support to Gunn, after the latter was fired. Bautista even said that he may consider terminating his contract with Marvel after Avengers: EndGame, if Gunn is not taken back, and even tweeted out his desire to be a part of his Suicide Squad 2.
