Marking the fourth death anniversary of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, his father Balkaur Singh publicly criticised the state and central governments for failing to provide justice. Speaking at a memorial gathering in Moosa village, Singh accused authorities of intentionally delaying the investigation into his son's murder and claimed he is facing constant pressure to reach a compromise with those involved. The Assassination of Sidhu Moosewala
Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead by unidentified assailants on May 29, 2022, while travelling in his personal vehicle through Jawaharke village in Punjab's Mansa district. The 28-year-old singer-turned-politician was hit by multiple bullets and died within minutes of the attack.
Following the killing, Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar claimed responsibility, orchestrating the hit on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as part of an ongoing inter-gang rivalry. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) subsequently nominated 34 individuals in connection with the conspiracy and execution of the murder, leading to dozens of arrests over the following years.
Balkaur Singh Denounces Alleged Inaction and Political Pressure
During the fourth-anniversary gathering, an emotional Balkaur Singh alleged that administrative inaction is actively harming his family. He claimed that law enforcement has failed to thoroughly interrogate the primary masterminds and challenged the legal system regarding the lack of scientific testing on the suspects.
"You know well what they have done to my family," Singh stated. "They didn’t just take away my son’s body but now they are trying to kill his legacy too. I had asked for a narco test on the accused and if your law doesn’t permit it, then release them."
Singh also claimed that intermediaries have been sending him messages, urging him to accept political concessions in exchange for dropping his pursuit of the case.
"You send messages saying ‘Accept a siropa, bow down before us at dawn and we will get all your work done.’ You may kill me, you may ruin my entire household, but I will never leave my party," Singh said, remaining firm on his political affiliations.
He directly questioned the security framework that allows jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to allegedly continue issuing weekly threats to his family and other public figures.
"BJP has kept Lawrence Bishnoi to use him for giving threats. Now there is one threat every week. Tell me is Lawrence Bishnoi really giving these threats sitting in jail or the governments are just using gangsters to create an atmosphere of fear," Singh remarked.
Ongoing Investigation in Sidhu Moosewala Murder Case
The remarks follow recent legal manoeuvres by the family to push for transparency in the slow-moving trial, which involves hundreds of witnesses and a shifting criminal landscape.
In April 2026, Balkaur Singh, through his counsel Advocate Satinder Pal Singh Mittal, moved an application before the Mansa sessions court demanding a formal status update on four specific accused individuals: Navjot Singh (alias Jyoti Pandher), Kanwarpal Singh Grewal, Avtar Singh, and Jeevanjot Singh (alias Jugnu). The application alleged that the police had failed to submit a clear report or challan clarifying whether these suspects had been officially arrested or cleared of charges. In response to the court's directive, the Punjab Police SIT recently submitted a status report. The investigation cleared Jeevanjot Singh (Jugnu) of conspiracy charges due to a lack of evidence. However, the other three men remain under active scrutiny.
