The release of Jana Nayagan, the highly anticipated final film of actor-turned-politician Vijay, has entered a complex legal and regulatory phase. As Tamil Nadu prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections, state officials have confirmed that the film’s fate now rests with national electoral authorities. ‘Jana Nayagan’ CBFC Row: Tamil Director Ameer Sultan Hints at Politics in Thalapathy Vijay’s Film Delay.
Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer On 'Jana Nayagan' Row
Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik addressed the media on Thursday, describing the current situation as "unprecedented." The core of the issue lies in the timing of the film’s release, which coincides with the transition of its lead star into full-time politics as the head of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.
With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) now in effect across the state, Patnaik noted that any medium, including cinema that could potentially influence voters must be scrutinised. "The Election Commission of India (ECI) will have to take a final call on the film’s release during or before the elections," she stated, adding that the commission would provide specific guidelines soon.
'Jana Nayagan' Certification Hurdles and Delay
Originally slated for a major release during the Pongal festival in January, Jana Nayagan has faced a series of setbacks involving the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). While the producers, KVN Productions, initially expected a 'U/A' certificate, the process was stalled after a member of the examining committee raised concerns that certain scenes could "hurt sentiments."
The film was subsequently referred to a revising committee. Conflicting reports suggest that while a screening was scheduled in Chennai earlier this week, it may have been moved to Mumbai, where the board reportedly recommended that the ECI review the content due to its heavy political themes.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 Timeline and Impact
The controversy unfolds as Tamil Nadu heads toward a single-phase election on April 23, 2026. The MCC, which began on March 15, prohibits any activity that gives a candidate or party an unfair advantage.
Because Vijay is a prominent candidate, the ECI must determine if the film's political dialogues and imagery constitute a form of campaigning. The producers have questioned the necessity of this review, indicating they had considered holding the release until after the May 4 results were announced. ‘Jana Nayagan’ Row: CBFC Revising Committee Refers Thalapathy Vijay’s Film to Election Commission – Reports.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is billed as a political action thriller and serves as Vijay's "swansong" before he focuses entirely on his political career. The film features a high-profile cast, including Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde, with music by Anirudh Ravichander.
