Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj died after suffering a heart attack in Chennai on Saturday, June 27. He was 73. Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, son and actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.

Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Tamil Nadu's Erode district, he began his film career as an assistant to acclaimed director Bharathiraja before establishing himself as one of the industry's most influential filmmakers.

His most celebrated works include Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal and Darling, Darling, Darling, all of which remain classics in Tamil cinema.

Bhagyaraj also made a successful foray into Hindi cinema by directing Aakhree Raasta (1986), starring Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role alongside Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Anupam Kher. The film became one of the notable Hindi releases of the decade and showcased his storytelling talent to a wider audience.

His contribution to Tamil cinema was widely acknowledged, with former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and legendary actor M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) once publicly describing Bhagyaraj as his heir in the film industry.
