Moothon is written and directed by Geetu Mohandas, who has helmed a short film Kelkkunnundo and a Hindi movie titled Liar's Dice (which received two National Film Awards). Talking about Moothon, it is her second feature-length film and debut movie in Malayalam. Moothon, which is releasing today, features Malayalam film industry’s heartthrob Nivin Pauly in the lead. He would be seen playing the character Akbar aka Bhai. In an interview Nivin stated that his character in the film was an ‘extremely demanding role’. We have seen Nivin Pauly in rom-coms and family entertainer flicks. This is the first time we’ll get to watch him in such an intense avatar. The trailer of Moothon showed how this movie is going to be a game-changer in Nivin’s career. In an interview to The Hindu, the actor has explained not only about his character in Moothon, but he also shared about his experience of working on his character and also with director Geetu Mohandas. Moothon means elder brother in Malayalam. This movie revolves around a teenager from Lakshadweep who comes to Mumbai in search of his elder brother. Nivin Pauly who would be seen in a rugged avatar in this flick told The Hindu, “Akbar was an intense role in many ways, physically and intellectually.” When he asked about his reaction when he was asked by Geetu Mohandas if he was ready to play the lead role Nivin stated, “It was an extremely demanding role. I wondered if I would be able to do justice to it and breathe life into Akbar, a complex man with a past. I had doubts about myself.”

Nivin Pauly had to perfect his dialects in Hindi and the Malayalam spoken in Lakshadweep. Not just that, he also had to gain weight for the role. There are certain portions in the film that also required Nivin to lose weight (which he did). Talking about Geetu Mohandas he said, “So, she would insist that there be no mobile phones on the sets and not to keep chatting and cracking jokes. Geetu is a very protective director who wants her actors to give their best.”

Moothon also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Shashank Arora, Roshan Mathew, Melissa Raju Thomas among others in key roles.
