‘Parasakthi’ Review

Expectations were high from Sudha Kongara's Parasakthi. But the Sivakarthikeyan starrer political thriller has been receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. According to critics, the film is visually rich but falters in its narration. The sluggish second half is what makes it disappointing. They felt that while the intent was good, the movie could have been more engaging and emotionally resonant by trimming a few minutes. It eventually turns into an ambitious but uneven attempt at making a political film.

Lensmen Reviews: In many ways, Parasakthi is the Rang De Basanti equivalent to a Tamil audience. While Rang De Basanti’s craft focused on evoking an emotion, Parasakthi is trying to build a script using sensible arguments in this language debate. Hence, the intentions of Parasakthi are noble. But in terms of the magic of filmmaking, you are not leaving the theatre with the high of having seen something that had an impact on you. If you are someone who is absolutely ignorant about the whole language debate, including the “Hindi Theriyathu Poda”, then this movie might well work as political GK 101 for you."

The Hindu: "There are also a few pan-India surprise appearances that are bound to trigger excitement among theatre-goers. Parasakthi is the kind of film that not only raises awareness – the actual anti-Hindi imposition movement and its heroes are chronicled in the end – but also packs in the right elements of cinema to entertain today’s audiences."

India Today: "Sivakarthikeyan delivers an emotionally strong performance as Chezhiyan with the right doses of aggression, wisdom and rage. Atharvaa sells Chinnadorai, an impulsive youngster fighting for the language, perfectly.  Parasakthi is an emotionally and politically strong film that captures the fight of our ancestors and reminds us of the fight that we need to carry for the next generation. Director Sudha Kongara delivers a relevant period drama that resonates with contemporary India, even if the execution falters in places."

Outlook India: "Parasakthi is, in many ways, a film of admirable intent undone by its own excesses. It is detailed where it should have been daring, expansive where it needed precision. The film could easily have shed at least forty minutes, emerging leaner, sharper and more emotionally resonant. As it stands, it remains an ambitious but uneven attempt at political cinema." ‘Parasakthi’ Actor Atharvaa Murali Calls His Film With Sivakarthikeyan and Sudha Kongara ‘Piece of History’.
