New Delhi, Sep 2: On August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled National Health Protection Mission or Ayushman Bharat. Two days later on August 17, a baby girl was born at the Kalpana Chawla Government Hospital in Haryana's Karnal district. Named Karishma, the girlchild has become the first beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), launched under Ayushman Bharat.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana was announced in the Union Budget as the National Health Protection Mission or Ayushman Bharat. PM Modi announced its rollout in his Independence Day speech on August 15, and the Haryana government started the scheme in 26 hospitals on the same. Hours after, Amit Kumar, a labourer from Sarpuria village of Karnal, brought his wife Mousami, who was expecting a child, the Kalpana Chawla Hospital.

On August 17, Mousami gave birth to Karishma. While Kumar became the first beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), Karishma is being called the first 'Aushman Bharat' baby and has attained celebrity status. "The government will bear all medical expenses. This scheme is very good," visibly happy Mousami told news agency ANI.

Reacting to the incident, Ayushman Bharat deputy CEO, Dr Dinesh Arora in a tweet welcomed Karishma into the world. “First claim raised under #AyushmanBharat. A baby girl is born through caesarean section at Kalpana Chawla Hospital in Haryana. Claim of RS 9000 paid to the hospital by Ayushman Bharat- Haryana. @AyushmanNHA welcomes the young angel!” he wrote. Health Ministry Holds Consultation over Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission.

The Kalpana Chawla Hospital reimbursed Kumar Rs 9,000 for Karshima’s birth. "There is an identification system for beneficiaries of the scheme. When patients are admitted, their name is enrolled in the system and they are made beneficiaries after due identification. If a family's name is there in the system, all the members become beneficiary.

Pregnant Mouusami was admitted here on August 15, she gave birth through cesarian section in the evening and as the baby was part of that family, she automatically became a beneficiary," Surender Kashyap, Director of Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College, told ANI. The scheme will officially be launched on September 25 — the birthday of RSS ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
