New Delhi, Mar 29: Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare ended his hunger strike on Thursday, six days after he began his indefinite fast. The protest was retracted by Hazare after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reached out to him here at the Ramlila Maidan.

In his public address after breaking the fast, Hazare said the Centre has agreed to most of the demands raised by him. "Government has conveyed to me that the Lokpal will be appointed at the earliest," he said.

"Another important demand raised by us was the addressal of farmers' plight. The government has conveyed to us that a mechanism is being created to increase the minimum support prices by upto 150 per cent. The same was mentioned by the Centre in the Budget," Hazare added.

"Although I am thankful to the government for agreeing to our demands, I would like to ask them why such a situation is being created that we have to come out in protest?" Hazare further added.

The 79-year-old, best known for his anti-corruption agitation in 2011, had earlier threatened to fast until the Lokpal is not appointed by the Narendra Modi government.

"We are disappointed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Four years have gone and still the government has shown no seriousness to appoint the Lokpal. I will not break my fast till our demands are not met," he had said.

Throughout Hazare's agitation, workers and activists affiliated to political parties were not allowed to join the protest by his core committee.

The agitation witnessed low footfall as compared to support he drew during the erstwhile Lokpal agitation.
