Madhya Pradesh, June 12: Spiritual guru and one of Madhya Pradesh's most high profile public personalities, Bhaiyyu Maharaj, also known as Bhaiyyuji Maharaj, committed suicide in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday afternoon. He shot himself in Indore and the police have confirmed that it is a suicide. According to reports, a suicide note is reported to have been found which says that he was depressed for a long time but no reason has been mentioned in the note.

The police is verifying if the handwriting in the suicide note matches that with Bhaiyyuji's. However, there are reports in newspapers that Bhaiyyu Maharaj was distressed due to issues in his family. It was only last year that he got married for the second time. The visuals from Bhayyuji Maharaj's residence in Indore has been put up by news agency ANI.

But it could not be verified if the reports about family issues or distress being the reason for his suicide are true. The police has issued a statement and said that all aspects of the case are being investigated and that family members will also be questioned:

Bhaiyyu Ji Maharaj's real name was Udaysinh Deshmukh and he was a model before he turned spiritual guru. He founded religious or spiritual institutions and organisations like the Shri Sadguru Datta Dharmik Evam Parmarthik Trust and Suryodaya Ashram.

Bhaiyyuji Maharaj was also a popular figure and had more than a reach in the political circles especially in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The Madhya Pradesh government in April had bestowed him with the status of minister of state in Madhya Pradesh cabinet.

Bhaiyyuji was in news during the Anna Hazare movement and agitation for the Jan Lokpal bill in 2011. At the time, senior Maharashtra Congress leader Vilasrao Deshmukh had roped in Maharaj to convince Anna to end his fast. The news of Bhaiyyuji's suicide has come as a shock and many politicians including  Nitin Gadkari, Pankaja Munde and Prithviraj Chavan have expressed shock and offered their condolences.
